COAR Notify functionality now available to DSpace users

COAR and the University of Minho Libraries are very pleased to announce that COAR Notify is now available in the DSpace platform.

COAR Notify allows repositories to send and receive messages to other ‘Notify-enabled’ platforms, supporting the interlinking of related resources across the scholarly ecosystem. Now any repository using DSpace 7.6 and DSpace 8 can make use of COAR Notify.

“This development will allow researchers at RepositóriUM and others that are part of the RCAAP network (Portuguese Open Access Scientific Repositories) to more easily publish with review services such as PCI and overlay journals hosted by Episciences,” says Eloy Rodrigues, director of the University of Minho Libraries.

COAR Notify represents an innovative use of two well-established technologies (linked data notifications and activity streams) and enables more seamless interactions between services, contributing to greater coherence and interconnection of research outputs.

How does it work?

Currently, there are two main use cases for the implementation of COAR Notify in DSpace:

(1) Authors can request a review from an external peer review service or overlay journal

(2) Authors can connect an article with a related research dataset in another repository

The development of COAR Notify in DSpace was undertaken by 4Science, a certified Platinum DSpace service provider, and includes the integration of COAR Notify messages into the repository manager dashboard so they can be appropriately monitored and managed. More details about the features and functionalities offered using COAR Notify is available on the 4Science website.

“We are very pleased with this accomplishment because DSpace is the most widely used repository platform in the world”, says Kathleen Shearer, Executive Director of COAR, “However, the full power of COAR Notify will only be really felt when a critical mass of repositories and services have adopted the technology. This is why COAR, with generous financial support from Arcadia, has been investing in the implementation of COAR Notify in several open source repository systems, overlay journals platforms, and peer review services.”

COAR Notify is already available in the Dataverse platform and development is underway in ePrints and Zenodo, along with a growing number of peer review systems including Peer Community In (PCI), eLife, and PREreview. The full list of implementations is listed in the COAR Notify catalogue.

More information about the DSpace implementation is available on the 4Science website and on the DSpace wiki.
